Part of this was due to the opening of the airport’s new international terminal. The airport now boasts non-stop connections to Europe, China and the Middle East to go along with a wealth of regional and domestic flights.
China remains a key market for Phuket with arrivals from the mainland jumping by almost 50 percent between 2016 and 2017. Arrivals from Australia and Europe have remained steady in the past few years. Guests from Russia are also returning after a few down years.
With more people visiting Phuket than ever before, hotel occupancy rates have also been on the rise. The Thai Hotels Association (THA) noted hotel occupancy rates on the island rose to 75 percent in 2017, an increase of almost 12 percent from 2016 totals. The THA also found that Phuket has the best performing hotel sector in all of Thailand.
